It’s no secret that the Holland/Grand Rapids area is highly oversaturated with with Photographers and with “wanna be” photographers who are just starting out, so it only makes sense to me, that we should act as a community and support each other, right? Help each other succeed? Seems like common sense, doesn’t it? It is really hard not to take it personally when clients who have been booked with you for months, leave at the last minute, simply because another photographer has dangled a carrot (A.K.A free/modeling session) in front of them. Now, I have no problem with photographers offering these sessions from time to time, in fact, I do them occasionally myself. They can be a great way to bring in new business and see some fresh faces. BUT, then there are those photographers that offer these mass calls for models month, upon month, upon month…. Taking clients who otherwise were scheduled with another photographer. Obviously no photographer owns a client, myself included. Clients are free to go to whichever photographer best suits their needs, finances, etc. But when customers disappear to the same photographer months in a row, it starts to sting. Now you’re not only messing with feelings, you’re messing with livelihood, and that hurts. In my opinion, this is stealing (though I’ve been harshly criticized for calling it that). I know from now on, when I offer a client something for free, I am going to make sure that they are not already on the schedule with someone else, or make sure the only reason they’re coming to me is not because of the offering of free. In my opinion, it isn’t fair. What do you think?
